Each rug begins as a sketch, first on paper, then on sturdy backing material stretched tight across
a vertical frame. I work color by color, punching yarn into the cloth from the back, coming around to the front from time to time to see how the rug is taking shape. This can take some time, as many of my rugs contain upwards of a hundred different colors. No two rugs are identical, and although I may repeat designs for a client, I’m always happiest when I’m working on something new. After more than 15 years,
I can still be surprised by what happens to a rug when the final color goes in.
